We are opening applications for our 2026 committee! Joining the UK’s largest student-led surgical society comes with lots of responsibilities and demands, but is an extremely rewarding experience. Our committee members have the opportunity to work with renowned surgeons, organise conferences with hundreds of attendees, and even present committee projects at national conferences.

Available Roles:
President
The president is the chair of the committee. They are expected to:
- Chair weekly meetings
- Take on the majority of administrative tasks (eg organising meetings, creating timelines and schedules for projects)
- Make the final decision on activities when the committee is uncertain.
- Be present at and introduce all events.
- Maintain relations with key contacts, such as patrons.
- Assist and provide advice to the rest of the committee.
- Represent Scalpel at RCS and MMS meetings.
Vice President
The Vice President is expected to take on a large portion of leadership responsibilities with the president. They are expected to:
- Assist the president in chairing meetings and administration tasks mentioned above.
- Be present at and introduce all events.
- Maintain relations with key contacts, such as patrons.
- Assist and provide advice to the rest of the committee.
Secretary
The Secretary of the society is essential to maintaining good communication between the committee. They are expected to:
- Ensure (and log) attendance at meetings.
- Note discussions on the agenda.
- Write an action plan or decision on each agenda item.
- Ensure minutes and plans are forwarded to everyone on the committee.
- Assist and provide advice to the rest of the committee.
Treasurer
The treasurer is responsible for day to day running of the society’s accounts, and is expected to:
- Work with the President and Vice President to create a budget for the year.
- Work with relevant events/project directors to create budgets and allocate funds for their tasks.
- Arrange funding from potential sponsors and the university.
Workshop Lead
The workshop lead is expected to plan and run workshops throughout the year, and research new innovative workshop ideas that could be implemented.
Lecture Lead
The lecture lead is expected to plan and run lectures/webinars throughout the year. They are expected to run an APEP/research lecture series along with occasional talks from high-profile surgeons.
Social Media & Communications Lead (x2)
Social media and communications leads form a pivotal part of spreading Scalpel’s impact. They are expected to:
- Design and post advertisements and feedback for all events.
- Plan and execute reel and tiktok ideas with other committee members.
- Create announcements for base & pre-clinical reps to disseminate on What’s App groups.
- Regularly monitor emails and respond to queries.
*Previous social media experience is desirable.
Mentorship Lead (x2)
The mentorship leads will be responsible for the society’s mentorship scheme, and are expected to:
- Recruit mentors from around the North West.
- Arrange mentee applications and allocate successful candidates.
- Coordinate communication between mentors and mentees.
- Liaise with base reps responsible for their mentees.
Digital Engagement Officer
The Digital Engagement Officer is responsible for:
- Designing and updating the society’s website.
- Designing and disseminating monthly newsletters to members.
- Organising membership options on the SU website.
Research & Innovation Officer
The research & innovation officer is a new role aimed at experienced researchers who want to contribute to the academic success of the society. They will be responsible for supervising research activities and generating ideas/innovations that the society can use to improve its projects.
*Please note there are NO opportunities for first authorships with this role, however the officer will likely acquire many supervising (last-name) authorships.
Podcast Lead
The podcast lead is a new role aimed at applicants with editing experience. They will be expected to run the society’s podcast and assist/lead in the planning of events.
Base Representatives (x4)
Base representatives are expected to:
- Disseminate information to peers in their base hospital, and help answer any of their queries.
- Assist in the running of the mentorship scheme by communicating with mentees based in the same hospital as them.
- Assist/lead in the planning of events.
*Please note, we will recruit one representative from every base hospital (MRI, Wythenshawe, Salford & Preston)
Graduate Entry (GEM) Representative
The GEM Rep is expected to:
- Disseminate information to their peers in the GEM cohorts, and help answer any of their queries.
- Assist/lead in the planning of events.
Year 2 Representative
The Y2 Rep is expected to:
- Disseminate information to their peers in their year group, and help answer any of their queries.
- Assist/lead in the planning of events.
Year 1 Representative
The Y1 Rep is expected to:
- Disseminate information to their peers in their year group, and help answer any of their queries.
- Assist/lead in the planning of events.
