The Service of Thanksgiving has become an annual event in memory of those who have bequeathed their bodies to the University in the previous academic year. The Service is unrelated to the final committal or funeral service of any individual, but, rather, is intended as an opportunity for the public-spirited actions of the donors to be acknowledged.

The Service last year was attended by approximately 400 people. These included many relatives and friends of the deceased, current students, academic, administrative, postgraduate and support staff, senior University representatives, senior civic officials and clergy. From the feedback we received, it is clear that the Service was greatly appreciated by the families of the donors.

The Service this year will be held at 12:15 for 12:30pm on Tuesday 20, March in the University’s Whitworth Hall.

I am delighted to say that, once again, representatives of our students will take an active part in the Service.
I am writing to invite you to attend the Service, as a gesture of recognition of the selfless actions of the donors and the benefit that the University and our students derive from these bequeathals.

This will be a non-denominational Service. I would like to stress that you do not need to be of any particular religious affiliation or, indeed, to hold any religious belief, to attend the Service. Everyone will be made most welcome.

Alan Crossman
Professor of Anatomy

CONCEPT

This “rap” looks at two main anatomical motions which are complex in terms of their muscular anatomy – shoulder flexion and shoulder abduction, by looking at a well known physiological position of gangster rappers; the Gangster Lean. This position is adopted whilst driving to put one hand on the wheel, and the other around the seat or companion of the driver of a car.

LYRICS

When you hear a rapper say “Gansta Lean”

Anatomically, this is what I think he means,

Flexion at the shoulder to hold the wheel,

Pec major and deltoid, they’re the big deal,

Coracobrachialis and a bit of biceps,

The other arm up has only has three steps,

For shoulder abduction, its supraspinatus,

Only 20 degrees though, for all of you haters,

Deltoid keeps it going til it can’t go no more,

Then scapula rotation like a touchdown score,

(For further anatomical details and explanation..)

SHOULDER FLEXION

The first main player in shoulder flexion is the large anterior muscle which originates from the anterior thoracic wall – Pectoralis Major. This has origins from the sternum, top 6 costal cartilages as far as the aponeurosis of external oblique. This inserts into the humerus on the lateral lip of the intertubercular groove, and as you can imagine from its anterior position, pulls the humerus forward on contraction.

The second main player is Deltoid, and in particular the anterior fibres. This muscle operates in a slightly different way – coming from the lateral clavicle, acromion and superior aspects of the scapula, and attaches on the far side of the humerus at the deltoid tuberosity. Later we will see that contraction of the other portions of this muscle also help abduction.

Hence the “Big Deal” associated with these muscles – they are big, and important in shoulder flexion.

However, other muscles play a role in flexion, and Coracobrachialis is one of them – reading from the name “coraco” from the coracoids process of the scapula, leads to the “brachialis” part – the medial humerus which is its insertion. This is involved in adduction as well as shoulder flexion.

Lastly, and perhaps unfairly belittled by the rap, was Biceps Brachii – spanning two joints, this muscle coming from the coracoid process again, and its long head from the supraglenoid tubercle, inserts way down on the radius. However, given its anterior course, it weakly assists in the shoulder flexion.

SHOULDER ABDUCTION

What some people call the “three stage rocket”, shoulder abduction can be fairly complex.

It starts with Supraspinatus, originating in the superior of the scapula (supraspinus fossa), and inserting via the capsule into the greater tubercle of the humerous, this initiates abduction to around 20 degrees. You may not think this muscle has many “Haters”, but actually there are two main demographics – firstly those who think that this muscle is misnamed as a rotator cuff muscle because its action is not rotation. Secondly, those suffering Supraspinatus Inpingement or tendonitis, which was first described by Neer in 1972. This comes about because of the narrow space through which the supraspinatus tendon must pass beneath the acromion and coraco-acromial ligament. Big up to my homies with the shoulder ache.

We have already seen Deltoid, and here it features again, until approximately 85 degrees of abduction, when the head of the humerus becomes biomechanically unable to rotate in its position against the humerus.

This requires us to rotate the scapula to achieve any further degree of elevation, as the relationship between the humerus and glenoid is maintained, but the scapula itself causes the arm to raise. This requires a multitude scapula associated muscles for another day and another rap.

MHSG students with an interest in Medicine were delighted to have the chance to explore the field of Surgery, a traditionally male-dominated profession.

The ‘From School to Surgery’ day was led by Scalpel, the University of Manchester’s Surgical Society. It enabled girls, from Year 11 and the Sixth Form, to experience practical skills and listen to advice from both medical students and doctors about joining this field.

Laura Herd (11M) said: “We participated in various activities including learning how to ‘scrub up’, discovering the essential first aid required to treat somebody with upper body limb injuries and finally, we were taught how to suture using the Surgeon’s Knot! It was both an interesting and enjoyable day, providing lots of food for thought.”

Hannah Chan (11S) added: “The university students were very helpful and gave us an honest and detailed account of what Medical School is really like.”

Calling all entrepreneurs!

What is the NHS missing? Got any ideas? Fancy a CV Boost? Fastforward is the latest project from Fastbleep – a national student innovation competition culminating in a conference in March 2012!

If you have an original idea of a product/software/service that would revolutionise the NHS and want this turned into reality with £40,000 investment look no further!

Step 1: Get a team & develop an idea

You’ll need a team to get thinking. Good ideas come more often when you have people from different backgrounds and faculties working together. Start with lots of problems to solve and get it down to your best idea.

Step 2: Enter one of the FastForward categories

FastForward has four categories for student entries: education, technology, care and unmet clinical need. Fill out the application form describing your idea and its potential impact on healthcare. Submit and share it to win one of the FastForward prizes.

Step 3: Pitch for investment & mentorship

The FastForward 2012 conference will be held in March in Manchester. All entries will pitch their idea with a chance to win one of seven prizes, including £40,000 of investment and mentorship from our development partners – make your idea a reality.

This competition will harness the creativity and talent of higher education students in order to solve problems in healthcare.

For more information and to register your interest: http://www.fastforwardhealth.com/

Or just come along to the conference!

Training in the UK has changed since the European Working Time Directive, resulting in less training time. This means less opportunity to develop surgical skills. We have looked at ways of developing these skills, and one way is through the use of simulators. The current simulators are expensive, and also not very accessible. How many of you have got regular access to a simulator? In fact, many surgical trainees don’t have.

This surgical simulator training project will look at 3 different simulators and see whether they help develop arthroscopic surgical skills (keyhole surgery into a shoulder joint).

Simulator 1: Virtual reality simulator

Simulator 2: Plastic model simulator

Simulator 3: Computer model simulator

About the Project

Hypotheses: regular simulator training, irregardless of which simulator is used, will develop arthroscopic skills.

Methods: 100 medical students will be recruited. 2 groups will be formed – 3SIM access and 2SIM access. 3SIM access access will have access to 3 simulators, and 2SIM access group will have access to Simulator 1 & 2 only. Each medical student will be assessed monthly from month 0 to month 6 (7 visits) and each will have an hour session on simulator 1 & 2. 3SIM access group will have username and password access to access simulator 3 via an internet enabled computer.

Target audience: medical students who are able to give up 1 hour per month for 6 months to come to Bridgewater hospital to be assessed on the simulators. Those randomised into 3SIM access should practice on the simulator 3 as much as possible at home. All years are welcome, but priority will be given to senior years in the early cohorts. 25 students will be accepted every 6 months, so even if you are a junior year, put your name down and pre-register for the next cohort. What do you get out of it?

Each medical student will have 7 sessions on a virtual reality simulator, and 7 sessions on a plastic model simulator for FREE – a plastic model course only for half a day costs £300!!

After completing all sessions, you will get a certificate signed to show how much time you spent on the simulators and that you were part of the study

This study is being overseen by Prof Len Funk, a very prominent name is Orthopaedic Surgery.

This project is run by an orthopaedic registrar (Mr Maulik Gandhi) who ran this as his project option at Manchester University, and it certainly helped him get his training number. Where will this take you?

How do you sign up?

Sign up using this online form!
